The author is a mother of two grown sons and grandmother of two grandsons. She learned by experience what kinds of books young boys like to read. She has read (to sons or grandsons) all of the books mentioned in the story. She lives with her husband of 46 years, dividing the time between Texas (on the lake) and New Mexico (in the mountains). She is a former elementary school teacher and real estate broker.

The illustrator has been an artist since childhood when her first grade teacher was impressed with the crayon drawing of a horse.  She has illustrated three other books. She is a mother of one grown daughter and lives with her husband in Texas. She and the author have been best friends for 25 years. They taught school-age children together in Children's Church for 17 years where the children's favorite was a chalk talk by the artist while the author told the story.
